Hey lovelies! The day has finally come when I had to say my last farewell to my lovely grandmother. I went home for her homegoing this past weekend and I wanted to share with you what I wore to her celebration plus more.
Warning: This post is kind of long.
Bottom right: My grandparents and I at my high school graduation. I lost my grandfather in 2006. I ‘m going to miss them dearly. They were married for 40+ years. Now that’s real love. It doesn’t get any better than that.
This is what I wore to my grandmothers homegoing. My family & I refused to wear black because this was a celebration of her life, not a mourning. We also wore a broach in her honor. My grandmother loved broaches and dolphins were her favorite. All broaches worn came from her collection.
These are a few Instagram pictures I took. If you haven’t already, follow me on Instagram @niqueplus2.
The next few pictures are items that I was able to pick from my grandmothers collection/wardrobe as keepsakes. I will wear these items with pride and cherish them as long as I am able.
For those who don’t know, I love leopard print everything and fun patterns & prints.
Isn’t that bow cute!?! You wouldn’t guess that it’s a broach.
Those Africa shaped earrings are fierce hunny! I love them all!
My grandmother had some jazzy pieces in her collection. I love unique & fun accessories; especially earrings.
And we can’t forget the Harley Davidson collectible item. My grandmother retired from Harley Davidson. She made sure every grandchild/great-grandchild had something that represented Harley; rather it be a lil’ onsie {as a baby} or t-shirt {as a child/teenager}. She loved working for Harley Davidson and swore that one day she’ll ride a Harley motorcycle like a true biker girl.
Three years ago I relocated to Houston and when I found out that my grandmother had suddenly gone ill I started to regret that I ever moved away. Though there’s nothing that I’ve could’ve done if I had stayed, I still wish I could’ve spent her last days with her. I am very grateful for my family because they took so good care of our grandmother. Sending her to a facility was not an option and she received the best home care anyone could ask for. I am very thankful for that.
We’ve always had a tight bond amongst us as a family. My grandmother would’ve had it any other way. She was the rock, glue, and Queen of our castle. Her poise was so genuine. I loved her positive outtake on life and how she never took sides. She was the peacemaker amongst us all.
I was able to visit her one last time before she passed on and I’m so glad I did. I broke down because she was in her final stages and I was afraid she wouldn’t know who I was. To my surprise she did.
Never take life for granted lovelies. And always spend as much time as you can with your loved ones. Even if it’s just a phone call to say hello. And cherish those memories too. My fondest childhood memory with my grandparents was every Saturday morning we would have a big breakfast {homemade or restaurant} and then go thrifting. That was our weekend ritual and is why I love shopping & thrifting so much.
Hope everyone has a lovely week! I return to work tomorrow so back to reality I go.
My grandma loved jazz music so this is for her {one of her favorites}:
Stay beautiful!
